The targeting of medical cadres by the Syrian government is a crime against humanity

The Syrian Network for Human Rights

The Syrian government kills and injures hundreds of people daily and those who survive from the injured are not able to go to public hospitals to be treated as they fear detention or physical liquidation. This has placed the medical cadres in a very tricky situation – to abide to the governments orders and to inform them of the patients, knowing that these patients are going to be arrested and detained and may even be tortured, or to ignore the orders and to make the health of the patients their priority, by doing so putting themselves in danger for protecting their patients.

SNHR Statement about Syrian IDPs and Refugees

The Syrian Network for Human Rights

The number of internally displaced persons has alarmingly spiked making it impossible for local organizations and committees to cover their needs. The number has risen from 3.5 million according to the latest statistic by the Syrian Network for Human Rights issued in early October 2012 to reach around 4.8 million by early December 2012. The bulk of IDPs in the past month came from Aleppo due to the increase in random bombardment by Meg warplanes using explosive barrels. According to SNHR member in Aleppo, the occupancy rate dropped to as low as 4% in some neighbourhoods as most of the residents fled their homes in fear for their lives and the lives of their families. In Homs, on the other hand, many neighbourhoods remain completely deserted such as al-Qusour neighbourhood which has been almost completely destroyed.

Alfan Alshamali massacre - Hama countryside, 02.09.2012

The Syrian Network for Human Rights

*The date of the incident: 02.09.2012

Given the geographical area the village is located it, Alfan Alshamali (northern Alfan) is located between villages of the Alawite sect. The majority of their residents are hence loyal to the Assad regime. Due to its concrete support of the Syrian revolution, Assad thugs in the neighbouring villages, along with security forces loyal to the regime, repeatedly threatened to destroy Alfan Alshamali village. The Syrian Network for Human Rights has repeatedly raised warnings concerning reactions that we, as a small organisation and other humanitarian and relief organisations, cannot enter Syria and educate the residents about. We find this important as this will have a negative impact on the topics of co-existence and transitional justice.
